About 50 km from Kolhapur, on the bank of the Krishna river, stands the Kopeshwar Temple at Khidrapur — one of the finest examples of 12th-century Hemadpanthi architecture in the Deccan. It is dedicated to Shiva (Kopeshwar), and its most striking feature is the circular sabhamandap — a round hall of carved pillars unlike anything else in the region.
The stonework is extraordinary: pillars covered in intricate sculpture, a carved ceiling, and a shikhara that rises above the riverbank. Because it is off the main tourist circuit, you may well have the place almost to yourself — a rare privilege at a monument of this quality.
