Why it matters

Rankala Lake is the heart of Kolhapur's leisure life. A large, calm sheet of water on the edge of the old town, it is ringed by a broad promenade where families walk, couples sit, and the city exhales at the end of the day. A small stone temple pavilion stands in the water, and the setting sun turns the whole scene gold.

It is also the city's street-food stage. As dusk falls, the stalls along the promenade fire up — bhel, pani puri, ice cream and more — making it the perfect end to a day of temples and forts.

Rankala is best at sunset, but it has a gentle charm in the early morning too, when walkers and the lake's birds have it to themselves.
