The sanctuary

Why it matters

Established in 1958, Radhanagari (also called Dajipur) was the first wildlife sanctuary in Maharashtra. It lies in the Western Ghats — a UNESCO World Heritage region — and protects a swathe of evergreen and semi-evergreen forest that is a biodiversity hotspot.

Its star resident is the gaur (Indian bison), the largest wild cattle species in the world. The sanctuary is one of the best places in the state to see these magnificent animals, along with leopards, sloth bears, sambar and a dazzling array of birds. The Radhanagari Dam backwaters add a scenic dimension to the forest.

This is a place to come with patience and respect — sightings are not guaranteed, and that is exactly how a wild place should be.

  • Distance: ~50 km from Kolhapur
  • Best time: Oct–Mar (dry season, better sightings)
  • Safari: permits required; book ahead in season
  • Time needed: half to full day
  • Getting there: private cab strongly recommended

Planning your visit

Safaris, permits & best time

Safari and entry arrangements are managed by the forest department. Booking ahead is strongly advised, especially in the peak season (October–March), as slots fill up. Check current permit rules and fees with the forest office before you go.

Responsible tourism

  • Stay inside your vehicle during safaris — never get out near wildlife.
  • No loud noise, littering or feeding animals.
  • Keep a respectful distance from gaur — they are wild and powerful.
  • Carry binoculars rather than expecting to approach animals.
  • Support local guides and drivers who know the forest.

Beyond the forest

The dam & backwaters

The Radhanagari Dam backs up a large reservoir against the forested hills. The drive along the backwaters is beautiful, and the area is excellent for birdwatching. Combine the safari with the dam for a full nature day.

Tips

  • Start early — mornings are best for wildlife and the light.
  • Carry water, snacks and a light jacket (the ghats can be cool).
  • In monsoon the forest is lush but access can be tricky; check conditions.
